Lake Como Private Boat Tours: What to Know Before You Book

A motorboat cruising past the colourful village of Varenna on Lake Como

If there is one experience that defines Lake Como, it is seeing it from the water. The villas, gardens and villages were built to be admired from the lake, and a private boat lets you discover them at your own pace, with a local captain who knows every bay and story. For many of our clients, it becomes the highlight of their trip. Here is what to know before you book.

Why choose a private boat tour?

  • Your pace, your route: stop where you like, linger for photos and skip what doesn’t interest you.
  • A local captain: stories, hidden corners and the best angles on the famous villas.
  • Comfort and privacy: just you, your family or friends, with no crowds or fixed timetables.
  • Flexibility: combine sightseeing with a swim, a lunch stop or an aperitivo at sunset.

Which boat is right for you?

Classic wooden boats

Elegant mahogany motorboats in the style of the 1950s and 1960s are the most iconic way to cruise Lake Como. They are perfect for couples, special occasions and anyone who wants that timeless “la dolce vita” feeling.

Modern motorboats

Spacious and comfortable, modern motorboats are ideal for families and small groups, with more room to relax and sunbathe and a smooth ride across the lake.

Water taxis

Private water taxis are a practical way to move between towns, reach a restaurant or get to a villa without waiting for public services. They are best for point-to-point transfers rather than leisurely sightseeing.

How long should your boat tour be?

  • 1 hour: a taste of the lake around your base, perfect for a first look or a sunset cruise.
  • 2 hours: the most popular choice, with time to see the central lake’s highlights at a relaxed pace.
  • 3 hours or half a day: time to explore further, with stops for a swim, a walk or lunch by the water.
  • A full day: for travellers who want to combine several villas and villages in one unforgettable day.

What you can see from the water

The central lake, around Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzo, offers the richest scenery in the shortest time. Highlights often include:

  • Villa del Balbianello, on its wooded promontory near Lenno, famous from films such as Casino Royale and Star Wars
  • Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, with its terraced botanical gardens
  • Villa Monastero in Varenna, with gardens stretching along the shore
  • Bellagio, seen from the water as it rises up the tip of the peninsula
  • Isola Comacina, the lake’s only island
  • The pastel villages of Varenna, Lenno and Nesso, and the grand villas of the shore near Cernobbio and Laglio

Starting from Como town is possible, but reaching the central lake takes longer, so a central base gives you more time on the water. Our guide to where to stay on Lake Como explains the pros and cons of each town.

The best time for a boat tour

Boat tours run from spring to autumn, with the warmest weather from June to September. Mornings are often calm and clear, while afternoons can bring a light breeze. A late-afternoon or sunset cruise, when the light turns golden on the villas, is a favourite for couples. In spring and autumn, bring a light jacket, as it is always cooler on the water. Private or shared boat tour?

Shared tours are a good option if you are travelling on a tighter budget and don’t mind a fixed route with other guests. A private tour costs more, but gives you complete freedom: your own route, your own timing and the captain’s full attention. For special occasions, families and anyone who values privacy, private is the way to go.

Tips before you book

  • Book early in summer: the best boats and captains are in high demand from June to September, especially at sunset.
  • Choose your starting point wisely: a pick-up close to your hotel saves time.
  • Think about the occasion: a proposal, anniversary or celebration can include special touches on board.
  • Pack layers and sunscreen: the sun is strong on the water, and evenings can be cool.
  • Ask about swimming stops: on warm days, a swim in the lake is unforgettable.
