Our home lake, at its best

Lake Como is where we live and work. Its alpine views, glassy water and historic waterfront estates have made it an icon of Italian elegance, and we know its villages, boat captains and restaurants personally.

We design itineraries around what you want to see and do, so you enjoy the lake without the hassle of complex planning: private boat tours and villa visits, private drivers, and tables at the restaurants worth booking.

With 24/7 local support, your stay on Lake Como is simple, comfortable and well coordinated from start to finish.

Getting around

Every transfer, handled

Lake Como looks easy on a map. In practice the coastal roads are narrow and winding, summer traffic is heavy, and public boat services run to their own timetables. We plan every leg so you travel comfortably and on time.

Private drivers and airport transfers

Professional, English-speaking drivers for arrivals from Milan Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo or Zurich, and for day trips across the region.

Private boat transfers and tours

Travel across the lake on your own schedule, with direct boat transfers and custom routes between lakeside towns and villas.

Helicopter transfers

Fast connections between regional airports, private helipads and key destinations, when time matters.

Day-to-day logistics

Every boat departure, driver pickup and villa visit is coordinated behind the scenes by our local team.

When to go

Lake Como through the year

The lake is beautiful from March to November. We help you choose the right moment and book the best hotels, boats and villa visits well in advance.

Spring

Mild weather, gardens in bloom at Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi, and fewer visitors than in summer.

Summer

Warm, sunny days for swimming and dining outdoors. The busiest season, so book early.

September and October

Comfortable temperatures, quieter towns and the grape harvest. Many travellers’ favourite time.

Plan ahead

The best lakefront hotels, villas and classic boats often book 6 to 12 months in advance.

Beyond the lake

Combining Lake Como with the rest of Italy

Most of our clients pair Lake Como with Milan, Venice, Florence and Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast or the Dolomites, and some continue across the border to Lucerne and the Swiss Alps.

We act as your single point of contact for the whole journey: private drivers, train tickets and regional flights between destinations, door-to-door luggage transfers and hotel check-ins timed around your schedule.

Is Lake Como worth visiting?

Lake Como is widely considered one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy and is absolutely worth visiting for travelers seeking a combination of stunning scenery, elegant towns, historic villas, excellent food, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Located less than an hour from Milan, Lake Como offers a unique blend of natural beauty and Italian culture. Visitors can explore picturesque lakeside villages such as Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio, enjoy boat cruises across the lake, visit historic villas with spectacular gardens, and dine in restaurants overlooking the water and surrounding mountains.

Unlike many popular destinations in Italy, Lake Como provides a slower pace of travel. While cities such as Rome, Florence, and Venice are rich in history and monuments, Lake Como is a destination where travelers can truly relax and enjoy the landscape.

The lake is also an excellent base for luxury travelers, honeymooners, families, and first-time visitors to Italy. Whether you choose a luxury lakeside hotel, a boutique property in a historic village, or a private villa, Lake Como offers accommodations for a wide range of travel styles.

For travelers looking for a memorable Italian experience that combines beauty, culture, and relaxation, Lake Como is often one of the highlights of their entire trip.

What is the best town to stay in on Lake Como?

The best town to stay in Lake Como depends on your travel style, interests, and budget. Each area of the lake offers a different experience.

Bellagio is often considered the most iconic town on Lake Como. Located where the lake splits into its three branches, it offers beautiful views, elegant streets, boutique shops, and excellent restaurants. It is an excellent choice for first-time visitors who want to be centrally located.

Varenna is smaller, quieter, and more romantic. With colorful waterfront buildings, charming alleyways, and easy train connections to Milan, it is one of the most popular towns for couples and travelers seeking a more authentic atmosphere.

Menaggio offers a relaxed ambiance, a beautiful lakeside promenade, and convenient ferry access to Bellagio and Varenna. It is particularly popular among families and visitors who prefer a less crowded environment.

Como Town is the largest city on the lake and offers the easiest access from Milan. It is an excellent option for shorter stays and travelers who prefer a wider selection of restaurants, shops, and transportation options.

At Italy Bespoke Tours, we generally recommend Bellagio, Varenna, or Menaggio for first-time visitors who want to experience the most scenic and authentic side of Lake Como.

How many days should I spend on Lake Como?

The ideal length of stay in Lake Como depends on your travel style and what you would like to experience during your visit.

While it is possible to visit Lake Como as a day trip from Milan, we generally recommend spending at least two to four nights to fully appreciate the beauty and atmosphere of the region.

For travelers with limited time, a two-night stay allows enough time to explore some of the lake’s most famous towns, including Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio. You can enjoy a scenic boat ride, visit one or two historic villas, and experience the relaxed lakeside lifestyle that makes Lake Como so popular.

A three or four-night stay is often ideal for first-time visitors. This allows you to explore the central lake area at a more comfortable pace while enjoying activities such as private boat tours, villa visits, lakeside dining, wine tastings, hiking, and exploring lesser-known villages away from the crowds.

Many travelers are surprised by how much there is to see around the lake. Beyond the famous towns, visitors can discover beautiful gardens, mountain viewpoints, historic churches, charming lakeside promenades, and authentic local restaurants that are often overlooked by day-trippers.

Lake Como is also an excellent destination to combine with Milan, Venice, the Italian Lakes region, Switzerland, or a longer itinerary throughout Italy. In these cases, a three-night stay often provides the perfect balance between sightseeing and relaxation.

At Italy Bespoke Tours, we typically recommend three nights for first-time visitors. This allows enough time to experience the highlights of Lake Como without feeling rushed while still leaving time to explore other parts of Italy.

When is the best time to visit Lake Como?

The best time to visit Lake Como is generally between April and October, when the weather is pleasant, the gardens are in bloom, and the lake’s towns are fully open and vibrant.

Spring, particularly from April through June, is one of our favorite times of the year. Temperatures are comfortable, flowers are blooming throughout the historic villas and gardens, and visitor numbers are generally lower than during the peak summer months. The landscapes are especially beautiful during this period, making it an excellent time for sightseeing, boat tours, and outdoor dining.

Summer, from July through August, is the busiest season. The weather is warm, the lake is lively, and all attractions operate at full capacity. While summer offers a wonderful atmosphere, visitors should expect larger crowds, higher hotel rates, and increased demand for accommodations, restaurants, and boat tours. Advance planning is highly recommended.

September is often considered one of the very best months to visit Lake Como. The weather remains warm, the lake is still active, and the summer crowds begin to decrease. Many experienced travelers prefer September because it combines excellent weather with a more relaxed atmosphere.

October can also be enjoyable, particularly during the first half of the month. However, some seasonal hotels, restaurants, and attractions begin reducing their operating schedules as the season progresses.

While Lake Como can be visited during winter, many lakeside hotels and attractions close for the season, and ferry schedules become more limited. For travelers seeking the classic Lake Como experience, we generally recommend planning a visit between April and mid-October.

Are private boat tours worth it on Lake Como?

In our opinion, a private boat tour is one of the most memorable experiences available on Lake Como and is often the highlight of a visitor’s trip.

A private tour allows you to enjoy the lake at your own pace while accessing views and locations that cannot be fully appreciated from land.

Many of Lake Como’s most famous villas, including Villa del Balbianello, Villa La Cassinella, Villa Oleandra, and Villa Pliniana, are best admired from the water. A private boat tour provides unique perspectives of these historic properties while offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and lakeside villages.

Another advantage is flexibility. Unlike public ferries, private boats can follow customized routes based on your interests. Whether you wish to focus on the central lake area, explore quieter villages, enjoy a sunset cruise, or stop at a waterfront restaurant for lunch, the experience can be tailored to your preferences.

Private boat tours are particularly popular among honeymooners, families, luxury travelers, and first-time visitors who want to experience Lake Como in a more exclusive and comfortable way.

Although they represent a higher investment than public transportation, many travelers find that the experience justifies the cost. The views, flexibility, comfort, and overall atmosphere create memories that often become the highlight of an Italian vacation.

For travelers looking to experience Lake Como at its very best, a private boat tour is one of the experiences we most highly recommend.

Do I need a car on Lake Como?

For most visitors, we do not recommend renting a car when visiting Lake Como.

While having a car may seem convenient at first, driving around the lake can often become more stressful than enjoyable. Many roads are narrow and winding, particularly in the central lake area around Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio. During the peak travel season, traffic can be heavy, and finding parking is often difficult, expensive, and time-consuming.

Public transportation is available throughout the lake, but buses can become overcrowded during the busiest months, and schedules may not always be convenient for travelers looking to maximize their time. While ferries are an important part of the transportation network, long queues are common during summer, especially in the most popular towns.

For this reason, we generally recommend combining private transportation with strategically chosen accommodations. Staying in walkable lakeside towns such as Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, or Como allows visitors to easily reach restaurants, cafés, shops, and waterfront promenades on foot without needing a vehicle.

Many of our clients choose to use private transfers for arrivals, departures, and longer journeys, while private water taxis provide a comfortable and scenic way to explore the lake itself. This approach eliminates the stress of driving, parking, and navigating unfamiliar roads while allowing travelers to enjoy the spectacular scenery that makes Lake Como famous.

In our experience, the most enjoyable way to discover Lake Como is not from behind the wheel, but from the water, from a charming lakeside terrace, or while strolling through one of its picturesque villages.

By combining centrally located accommodations, private transfers, and boat transportation, visitors can experience the very best of Lake Como in comfort and style.

What are the best things to do on Lake Como?

Lake Como offers far more than beautiful scenery. From historic villas and charming lakeside towns to private boat cruises, fine dining, hiking, and cultural experiences, there is something for every type of traveler.

One of the most popular experiences is exploring the lake by boat. Whether aboard a private wooden boat, a luxury speedboat, or a water taxi, seeing Lake Como from the water provides a unique perspective of its elegant villas, picturesque villages, and dramatic mountain backdrop. For many visitors, a private boat tour becomes the highlight of their stay.

Visiting the lake’s historic villas is another must-do activity. Villa del Balbianello, famous for appearing in films such as Star Wars and Casino Royale, is widely considered one of the most beautiful villas in Italy. Other notable properties include Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, known for its spectacular botanical gardens, and Villa Monastero in Varenna, which features stunning lakeside gardens stretching along the shoreline.

Exploring the lake’s iconic towns is equally rewarding. Bellagio, often referred to as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” offers elegant streets, boutique shops, and breathtaking views. Varenna charms visitors with its colorful waterfront, romantic atmosphere, and historic villas, while Menaggio provides a more relaxed and authentic lakeside experience with a beautiful promenade and lively piazza.

Food lovers will find plenty to enjoy throughout the region. From traditional trattorias serving local specialties to Michelin-starred restaurants overlooking the lake, Lake Como is a wonderful destination for Italian cuisine. Pasta and pizza masterclasses with local chefs and wine tastings are also popular experiences, allowing visitors to discover local traditions while enjoying regional wines and seasonal ingredients.

For travelers who enjoy the outdoors, Lake Como offers excellent hiking opportunities. Trails ranging from easy panoramic walks to more challenging mountain routes provide spectacular views over the lake and surrounding Alps. Popular options include the Greenway del Lago di Como and various trails above Bellagio and Varenna.

Many visitors also enjoy simply slowing down and embracing the lake’s relaxed lifestyle. Strolling along a lakeside promenade, enjoying an aperitivo overlooking the water, browsing local boutiques, or spending an afternoon at a luxury hotel terrace are experiences that capture the essence of Lake Como.

At Italy Bespoke Tours, we typically recommend combining several of these experiences during a stay. A well-balanced itinerary might include a private boat tour, visits to historic villas, time exploring Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio, a memorable lakeside dinner, and opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty that has made Lake Como one of Italy’s most celebrated destinations.

Whether you are visiting for two days or a full week, Lake Como offers an exceptional blend of culture, history, scenery, and relaxation that continues to captivate travelers from around the world.
